Definition and scope
Tibetan Buddhism comprises Tibetan-language textual, institutional and practice traditions with influence beyond Tibet. Indian Mahayana and Vajrayana connections matter, but imagery, divination or a lama stereotype cannot represent the whole. Lineages differ. Begin with texts, ethics and historical exchange rather than treating practices as an interchangeable mystical toolkit.
Structure and details
Kangyur and Tengyur provide a common distinction between translated scriptural materials and commentarial works. Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug name lineages without requiring isolated contact for every practitioner. Tantric imagery, mantras and mandalas have doctrinal and transmission contexts. Viewing a downloaded design differs from completing a religious practice.
Example and history
Museum material documents artistic exchanges with India, Nepal and neighboring regions, while a Kangyur catalogue offers a textual entry. Pair a sourced painting with relevant textual categories, investigating medium, figure and theme separately. If its precise ritual context is uncertain, preserve that uncertainty rather than inventing a lineage from colors or implements.
Contexts and limits
Tibetan Buddhism is not one fortune-telling system; protective beliefs do not erase its ethics, philosophy or monastic learning. Actual transmission has tradition-specific procedures. Wrathful imagery does not directly signify evil or an aggressive personality. Distinguish sacred claims, historical evidence and contemporary life without promises of healing, altered destiny or financial returns.
