Houses organize a chart around the local horizon and meridian. They are distinct from signs, and choosing a house system changes boundaries.

Definition and identification

Houses relate a local sky framework to twelve interpretive topics. The ascendant lies where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon, and the midheaven relates to the local meridian. Unlike signs, houses depend on place as well as time. The first house therefore cannot simply be identified with Aries.

Structure and reading rules

Whole-sign houses take the rising sign as the entire first house. Equal houses begin at the ascendant degree and use thirty-degree intervals. Quadrant systems such as Placidus use other divisions of time or space. A chart should state its house system, location, time source and daylight-saving treatment so its construction can be reproduced.

Concrete example

With an ascendant at fifteen degrees Taurus, whole-sign houses assign all Taurus to the first and all Gemini to the second. Equal houses instead start those houses at fifteen degrees Taurus and fifteen degrees Gemini. A point at ten degrees Gemini consequently changes house assignment. The example demonstrates different boundaries rather than a changed personal reality.

Historical context and limits

Ancient terminology and topic assignments do not always match modern practice, and Ptolemy does not represent every classical house tradition. Some quadrant methods encounter computational difficulties at extreme latitudes; software handling should be disclosed. House topics can organize historical study or reflection, while conclusions about family or work require ordinary real-world information.
