Definition and details
A Zhouyi edition may contain figures, hexagram judgments, line statements, transmitted commentaries and a named commentator’s notes. Distinguish base text, Wings, commentary and modern translation. Sharing sixty-four hexagrams does not guarantee identical organization: variant characters, punctuation and the placement of annotations can alter how the argument appears to a reader.
Structure and history
Traditional attribution links figures such as King Wen, the Duke of Zhou and Confucius with different layers, but attribution is not secure composition dating. Hanshu supplies early bibliographic evidence, while surviving printed witnesses have separate histories. Specify the arrangement used and never confuse a digital page’s edit date with the ancient work’s formation.
A concrete example
Take a page devoted to Qian and label its judgment, six line statements and transmitted explanations individually. Compare another edition that places commentaries elsewhere. This establishes whether a sentence belongs to the base text or an interpretive layer and prevents a modern paraphrase from being quoted as an ancient original.
Context and limits
Edition comparison illuminates reading traditions without establishing predictive efficacy. Searchable transcriptions are convenient, but important variant claims should be checked against images or reliable editions. Preserve title, chapter, editor and publication details. When explaining a hexagram, identify the witness and acknowledge that translation and punctuation may remain disputed.
