Definition and details
Vāstu literature concerns sites, directions, proportions, layouts and building purposes, beyond moving furniture toward a supposedly lucky corner. IGNCA presents it within traditional-knowledge education. Identify whether a text addresses a house, temple or settlement before examining how measurement, ritual and symbolic diagrams interact in its particular architectural program.
Structure and history
Authors, languages and compilation periods vary, so one label cannot cover all Indian architecture. IGNCA’s bibliography includes the Samarāṅgaṇa Sūtradhāra associated with Bhoja, providing a textual research route. Its use of science terminology is an institutional description; independent analysis must still distinguish measurable construction knowledge from religious symbolism and untested inference.
A concrete example
Choose a listed architectural treatise and compare its site conditions, plan proportions and directional terms with a building drawing. A grid first documents that text’s spatial organization, not a proven mechanism influencing residents’ lives. Record grid size, building type and edition, and distinguish a modern explanatory diagram from an original illustration.
Context and limits
Traditional spatial ideas help interpret heritage, while modern buildings require structural, fire, ventilation, accessibility and regulatory evidence. Historical symbolism cannot establish safety or health outcomes. Compare Vāstu with Chinese geomancy through specific texts and objects, avoiding a modern mixture of phases, chakras and fortune products presented as one timeless Eastern architectural rule.
