Definition and details
Shao Yong’s work arranges history through hierarchical cycles and diagrams, connecting heavenly order, human affairs and number. Yuan, hui, yun and shi are internal units rather than standard modern astronomical measures. Chronological lists and reflections serve different purposes; distinguish the arrangement of dates from the interpretation of change before discussing the title’s meaning.
Structure and history
The Siku account attributes the work to Song thinker Shao Yong and records its nested organization while preserving criticism of unsupported cycles and unconventional imagery. Praise and skepticism coexist. Volume arrangements depend on the witness; later Huangji numerical or Tieban passage collections should not automatically be included in the original work.
A concrete example
Its tables place stem–branch years and dynastic events within larger cycle headings. Trace one entry into its parent heading without assuming a future repetition. Compare this with reflections on order, disorder and human affairs to see that numerical organization accompanies political and ethical inquiry rather than eliminating it.
Context and limits
An orderly numerical structure can be compelling without proving cosmic cycles. Selection of events and framing can influence the impression of coherence, so compare internal reasoning with independent historical records. Read it as Song intellectual and diagrammatic history, avoiding forecasts of war, investments or personal outcomes; the old account is a historical evaluation, not modern certification.
