Definition and details
The MOE dictionary defines six named positions placed on fingers and counted through month, day and hour, also calling it a reported-time method. These are result labels, not six Zhouyi lines. Establish sequence and counting convention before interpretation; the shared ren character does not make its rules identical to another divinatory system.
Structure and history
Finger counting makes the scheme easy to memorize, while manuals can differ over starting counts, dates and intercalary months. The dictionary establishes terminology, not a secure inventor or founding date. Da Liu Ren employs different boards, lessons and transmissions, so Xiao Liu Ren should not be presented as an automatically equivalent abbreviation or credited to Zhuge Liang without evidence.
A concrete example
A structural exercise counts six steps around the cycle to return to the same place, or seven to reach the next. It illustrates cyclic mathematics without claiming a correct consultation for a date. A full demonstration must specify inclusive counting and calendar convention, since unnoticed counting differences can change the resulting label.
Context and limits
Dictionary fortune labels describe traditional interpretation rather than empirical forecasting. Counting can be reproduced without reliably predicting health, property or relationships. Separate mnemonic exercise, local practice and efficacy questions, document each manual’s conventions, and avoid mixing rules into a supposed sole ancient standard. A finger layout aids memory but does not add causal evidence.
