Definition and details
The mansions are grouped by the Azure Dragon, Black Tortoise, White Tiger and Vermilion Bird, with seven in each. Names connect with asterisms as well as divisions. Traditional coordinates use selected reference stars, so spans are unequal. Distinguish mansion, reference star, asterism and larger symbolic grouping before translating everything as constellation.
Structure and history
Shiji records regional asterisms, moving bodies and omen language, while later charts and instruments preserve mansion names. The museum glossary provides modern bilingual labels, not proof that all reference stars, counts and boundaries stayed fixed. Identify the chart’s period and textual basis before assigning present teaching labels to an earlier historical sky.
A concrete example
Locate Jiao, Kang, Di, Fang, Xin, Wei and Ji on a chart. They illustrate why seven named mansions need not occupy equal widths and how reference stars support mansion-based coordinates. This is a positional exercise, not a forecast; the traditional eastern grouping does not mean each asterism must always stand at the eastern horizon.
Context and limits
Mansions support coordinates, timekeeping, religious images and astrology in different contexts. They are not automatically equivalent to twenty-seven equal Indian divisions. Observing needs time, latitude, visibility and precession. Symbolic patterns are culturally meaningful, but mansion labels do not reliably determine health, relationships or ability, and terrestrial correspondences are not scientific causal zones.
