Definition and details
Calendars coordinate years, months and days, while mansions can describe celestial position rather than replace lunar phase. Solar terms use ecliptic longitude, lunar mansions use a sky division or marker, and stem–branch dates form a naming cycle. These can share a page but require distinct definitions before their relationships become clear.
Structure and history
Museum captions explain mansion-based coordinates and polar distances, while HKO defines solar terms by solar longitude. IMD supplies nakṣatra and tithi fields. These institutions describe different computational tasks: locating bodies, marking the solar year and organizing solar–lunar relations. Similar vocabulary does not remove the distinction among those tasks.
A concrete example
The equinox is defined by solar longitude, whereas that day’s lunar mansion requires the Moon’s position. Coincidence in one year does not guarantee the same pairing next year. Compare term and mansion-transition times in separate columns with the civil date to see how several cycles share one calendar page without a universal fortune label.
Context and limits
Mansion names also appear in customary date selection, but such prescriptions add an interpretive rule to astronomical classification. Conversion needs location, time convention and boundaries; historical tables additionally require observation and precession context. Computed mansion positions do not scientifically verify wedding or travel advice printed beside them, whose value here is historical documentation.
